Against the Bubble(wrap)

A cylindrical advertising pillar, completely wrapped in pink bubble wrap – and an invitation to passersby: Pop the bubbles!

What begins as a playful, almost childlike act takes on a second layer of meaning in David Fisslthaler’s work. Each popped bubble visibly alters the pillar’s surface; an intact structure gradually transforms into a fragmented skin.

Once the activity concludes, the wrap is removed, and the popped areas are marked with color and counted. This specific figure determines the donation amount: the artist contributes a portion of his fee – proportional to the number of bubbles popped.

The proceeds benefit Salzburg-based organizations that support families and children facing difficult life circumstances. In this way, a simple, universally understood gesture evolves from merely recognizing "bubbles" into a tangible act of real engagement. Afterward, the unrolled, color-marked wrap remains as a standalone artwork.
